To God be the glory

Quiet time & Scripture

A lamp for today's path

A simple way to read a short passage slowly, notice its meaning, and respond with prayer.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”

Psalm 119:105
World English Bible (WEB)

Make a little room to listen

A lamp offers light for the path close to our feet. Psalm 119 uses that familiar image to describe God's word. We may want a complete map of what comes next, but Scripture also helps us attend to the step before us: how to speak, what to value, and whom to trust.

A quiet time does not have to be long to be attentive. Begin with a few minutes and a short passage. If you are new to the Bible, a paragraph from one of the Gospels can be a helpful place to meet Jesus through His words and actions. Ask God to help you listen with honesty and humility.

Read the words in their setting

Read your chosen passage slowly, then read it again. Notice who is speaking, what is happening, and how the surrounding verses help explain the words. A single sentence can be encouraging, but reading it in context helps us avoid turning it into a promise the passage never makes.

You might write down one observation, one question, and one response. An observation says what the passage actually contains. A question identifies something you would like to understand. A response considers how its message might shape a prayer, an attitude, or a choice. You do not need to force a dramatic insight.

Carry one truth into the day

When a passage is difficult, it is reasonable to take more time, compare a clear translation, or ask a trusted Christian teacher for help. Learning Scripture is a continuing journey. Questions can become part of careful reading, rather than a reason to give up.

Finish with a short prayer that responds to what you have read. Give thanks for something the passage reveals about God. Confess what needs to change. Ask for wisdom to practise one faithful response. Then return to the ordinary responsibilities of the day, carrying that truth with you.

If you miss a morning or find it hard to concentrate, begin again gently. Bible reading is an opportunity to know and honour God. It does not need to become another performance measure. Thank Him for His word, and let the next small moment of attention be a fresh beginning.

TAKE A MOMENT

A question for reflection

What do you notice when you read today's verse alongside the verses around it?

A simple practice

Read Psalm 119:105–112. Write one observation, one honest question, and one short prayer in response.

TURN TOWARD GOD

A short prayer

Lord, thank You for Your word. Help me read carefully, ask honest questions, and receive Your instruction with humility. Let what I learn shape the way I love You and the people around me today. Through Jesus Christ, amen.
